An Assay Chemist at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory will perform chemistry assays to detect the presence of steroids, masking agents, and other substances in urine specimens. Incumbent will also maintain sample tracking records and enter specimen information into a computer database, as well as perform advanced chemistry in other areas of laboratory operations. Depending on experience and demonstrated abilities, the chemist will be utilized to assist in GC-MS chemistry or EPO analysis or LC-MS as well as other specialized areas of the lab. They will also be expected to handle related issues involving instrumentation, as well as participate in special tasks and projects as they arise. The position requires strict confidentiality and the ability to follow strict guidelines set forth in the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedure. Requires rotation in providing weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
Knowledge of a variety of organic, biochemical, and analytical chemistry techniques, including chemical derivatization, ether extraction, centrifugation, solvent stripping, ion exchange chromatography, enzymatic deconjugation, and chemistry extraction.
Ability to initiate work independently as required.
General knowledge of chemistry principles.
Knowledge of ions and retention times for GC-MS.
Physical dexterity and ability to load and operate GC-MS autosampler mechanisms.
Ability to use a computer terminal.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Knowledge of Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometer.
Ability to work weekends and holidays as necessary.
