The Legal Specialist (Level I) will advise and work in a variety of areas including contracting and researching.
This position will analyze, interpret and advise on legal-related issues, perform regular updates on project assignments and report to the appropriate parties as requested.
The Legal Specialist (Level I) will interact with the staff of the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute (Research Institute), University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) faculty and staff, and representatives of other institutions of higher education, life science and research-oriented businesses, attorneys, governmental entities and philanthropic organizations.
Fully negotiate, draft and review various agreements, including but not limited to, Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs), Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and Clinical Trial Agreements (CTAs) and other research-related agreements such as principal investigator name changes.
Analyze, interpret and advise regarding legal documents as requested.
Perform factual and legal research. Summarize, communicate, and act on information as requested and as required to complete goals.
Consistently interact with Director, Legal Services to facilitate Directors needs for the department and the Research Institute.
Manage information and inquiries for the Legal Services division as assigned.
Develop level of knowledge of the Research Institute and affiliated organizations (i.e., KU, KUCTC, KUCR, KUMC, Hospital Authority and others) and their policies and procedures.
Communicate in a cordial, articulate and timely manner with KUMC faculty and staff and external clientele (i.e., governmental entities, organizations).

Minimum Qualifications Education and/or experience equivalent to: J.D.
from accredited institution. Undergraduate degree having significant coursework in the life sciences, healthcare, pharmaceutical industry or related field OR one or more years work experience in life sciences, healthcare or pharmaceutical industry.
Preferred Qualifications Education and/or experience equivalent to: Knowledgeable of federally-funded grant contracts and regulations.
Knowledgeable of pharmaceutical or industry-sponsored contracts and agreements.
Familiarity with NIH, NSF and other funding agencies providing support to the biomedical research community.
Prior work experience in a university research administration environment.
