Critical Care Specialist
Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center (PVSEC) is seeking a motivated and energetic board certified or board eligible Critical Care Specialist to join our team of 3 Criticalists and 4 ECC residents. Our Criticalist’s primary responsibilities include primary case management for critically ill patients, mentoring and teaching of the ECC residents and availability for consult or management of critical cases coming from other specialty services and the emergency room. Our Criticalists also assist in training of the interns and ICU technicians who are enrolled in the AVECCT VTS program. Our Criticalists have a rotating, flexible schedule and are typically scheduled for 12-13 shifts per month. Criticalists at PVSEC generally do not have primary emergency receiving or surgery responsibilities.
Our ICU has two long term mechanical ventilators, 3 high flow oxygen units, 8 oxygen cages, telemetry, end tidal CO2, direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring. PVSEC maintains a large in house blood bank. In house laboratory capabilities include CBC, Chemistry Profile including T4 and bile acids, PT/PTT and blood gas analyzer. Our ICU is fully equipped for advanced procedures such as central line and arterial line placement, tracheostomy, feeding tubes, chest tubes, bone marrow aspirates, tracheal washes and peritoneal dialysis.

For board eligible candidates paid time off is available for board study. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. The applicant must also be board certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care or board eligible pending completion of an ACVECC approved ECC residency program. Applicants must be eligible to obtain a veterinary license in the state of Pennsylvania.

PVSEC has attained Level I VECCS certification and is an ACVECC provisional Trauma Center. Our team of doctors includes 11 experienced emergency veterinarians, 6 rotating interns, 3 surgery residents, 4 critical care residents and specialists in critical care (3), internal medicine (5), medical oncology (4), cardiology (2), neurology(2), surgery(8), ophthalmology (4), radiology (2), anesthesia (2) dermatology, radiation oncology, radiology, anesthesia and dentistry. Services such as an in house blood bank, staffed comprehensive in-house laboratory and pharmacy, critical care, rehabilitation, 2 on-site social workers, and 24/7/365 emergency coverage support the specialty services. Additionally, we participate with The Ohio State University in clinical trials.
